“Entre le Chien et le loup, the hour of magic as stated inancient Hebrew, when ‘one cannot distinguish a dog and a wolf’. Between the
shift of day and night, there’s magic in the eight, nine minutes.” (Zhu Tian-wen)
The cusp of dusk is similar to synchronic overlaps of time. Its transformations, unexpectedly indistinct, dusk warps into anticipation for gatherings and dispersions. Between light and twilight, hope and fear, emptiness and the presence, people tend to merge with their shadows – I become parts and partial to “myself” and “my shadow”. Since the liminal and the transformative are often subtle, it is only through visual comparison would we approach the enigma of ephemerality.
With these notions, the artist drew seven sets of coexisting yet contradictory concepts from literary resources regarding Entre Chien et Loup and transcribed them onto seven terrazzo slates in large-dimension. The intentionally mixed aggregates obscure the viewer’s perception (both for reading and viewing), just as we have to squint our eyes in identifying the dog from the wolf at nightfall.
