The cusp of dusk is similar to the overlapping of time. The transformation, unexpectedly indistinct, harnesses the power of anticipation for gatherings and dispersions. “‘Entre Chien et loup’… when ‘one cannot distinguish between a dog and a wolf’, lies at the point where day turns into night; there’s magic in those eight, nine minutes.” (Zhu Tian-wen) Between light and twilight, people tend to merge with their shadows – part of them lingering in the day, part submerged in the night. Since the liminal and the transformative are often elusive, it is only through meticulous visual comparison that we can approach the enigma of ephemerality.  

The artist draws seven pairs of coexisting yet contradictory concepts from literary sources on the subject of dusk (dog/wolf, light/twilight, emptiness/waiting presence, being/shadow, known/unknown, comfort/danger, hope/fear) and transcribes them onto seven terrazzo slates in large-dimension. The intentionally mixed aggregates obscure the viewer’s perception as they try to read and see, just as we have to squint to distinguish the dog from the wolf at nightfall.

置身于黄昏的人,体验到的往往并非日夜的临界,而是一种明暗共存的叠加。“啊狗狼暮色,magic hour。希伯来古文云,‘人们无法辨认是狗是狼的时刻’,白日将尽与黑天交替之际,这里有魔术的八、九分钟。”(朱天文)黄昏的魔术允许人与自己的影子融合——部分的你属于日光、部分的你归于暮色。

艺术家由此出发,从文学参考里选取了七组在黄昏时共存但对立的词(狗/狼,光/暮光,虚空/现身,存在/影,知/未知,安宁/危险,希望/恐惧),并将其转化为视力测试样的水磨石板。混杂排布的染色石子困扰着观者的“读”与“看”,正如暮霭沉沉时,我们被迫眯起双眼,方能辨认来客是狗或狼。
